This Arduino shield has bee designed for Data Logging to an SD card and also has an on board Real Time Clock, so you can easily time stamp your readings, it also comes with great documentation and libraries.

This board is fully assembled, apart from the header pins, We do supply male pins, but you may need stacking pins if you want to add another shield.


Just add your own SD card to log the data to, and write the sketch to take readings and log data. The data can be read by your computer (With an SD slot or SD card reader). We even have a tutorial on how to use two free software programs to plot your data

This shield does NOT come with an Arduino, though it does require one to work. It is supplied with male header pins and a battery for the Read Time clock.

  • SD card interface works with FAT16 or FAT32 formatted cards. 3.3v level shifter circuitry prevents damage to your SD card
  • Real time clock (RTC) keeps the time going even when the Arduino is unplugged. The battery backup lasts for years
  • links above to libraries and example code for both SD and RTC mean you can get going quickly
  • Generous prototyping area to add sensors or other circuitry
  • 3.3V regulator to supply your SD card with all the power it needs
  • Works with Arduino UNO, Duemilanove, Diecimila, Leonardo or ADK/Mega R3 or higher. ADK/Mega R2 or lower are not supported.

I had this up and running and definitively installed in a couple of days logging central heating temperatures. All sort of useful sketches to be found, several with useful RTC related stuff (set to PC time, for example). (The RTC makes price very reasonable). Seems happy with up to a 32 Gb card, maybe more. Using Excel to then deal with the .CSV files. Only down side is it is the older version, but no real issue at all, just commits you to specific pins.

Early days yet but so far does the job.The Ada site has a good walkthrough to be read carefully. I had a tussle getting Open Office to make graphs but minor tweaks to the sketch resolved that.

I have made progress with using this shield since my earlier review. For some reason I had missed the logging example on the Adafruit site, and also the shield schematic is on the site under 'downloads' and with this information I have been able to use it

Quality of the hardware and service from Proto-Pic merit 5 stars. My 3 star marking reflects my experience with the shield so far. Firstly it is the first shield that I have bought and I hadnít realised some general downsides of a shield,

This shield is a great way to get data storage and a real time clock as well. Read the information on the Adafruit website, not much to assemble but worth it.

Very useful shield, very simple to get started logging adaruit tutorials are very useful, and quite easy to get more advanced (faster logging) RTC is straightforward to use for logging time or time stamping files, an invaluable bit of kit for learning

Just received an Arduino data logging shield and now working on a simple weather station.Perhaps a note about the advantages or disadvantages of using male to male connector pins as against stacking connectors could be useful when using a pro type shield

The RealTime chip is great in combination with the data logger. It does take a lot of arduino flash memory though.Excellent shield, although I am not a fan of the prototyping area.
