Rotary encoders are used similarly to potentiometers. They’re different from potentiometers in that an encoder has full rotation without limits. They output gray code so that you can tell how much and in which direction the encoder has been turned.

This encoder is especially cool because it has a red/green LED built in, as well as a push-button. Look below for the clear knob that goes with this potentiometer.

Features:

  • Switch Travel: 0.5mm
  • Shaft Diameter: 6.0mm
  • Shaft Length: 18mm
  • Vertical Through-Hole Mount
  • Red/Green LED
  • Pushbutton

Get RGB instead of RG rotary encoder
Sunday, 12 February 2017  |  Richard

The RGB is a better device. The Leds on the RGB go to the VCC rail, whereas those on the RG and the switch go to ground. Thus on the RG device the switch goes to ground, but the encoder recommended circuit shows these switches going to Vcc. The RGB device is a cleaner design im my opinion.

Mechanical rotary encoder
Wednesday, 8 February 2017  |  Richard

The specification is generic so it does not give enough information. While this is a nice device, what I would actually like is an optical encoder (at a reasonable price) with a WS2812 RGB LED to allow 1 wire control of the colour and brightness.

Good quality encoder

An encoder, tactile switch and two LEDs all in one package is an ideal combo and for the price it's great value. At first I was a little dissapointed that there was not a detent click feel when the shaft was rotated (like the types I had got from Cliff El
